Hint: It Has Nothing To Do With Thanksgiving
About five years ago I locked up my home in Costa Rica to go to the states. It was the first week of October and I didn’t come back for a month. When I returned in November every single surface in my home was covered in mold. Black mold.
That was my third year living in Costa Rica and the year I realized the true meaning of Black November. It is not about great Christmas discounts on the day after Thanksgiving.
For me Black November and all its promotions and discounts serve as reminders that my house is full of the funk of 40 days and 40 nights of rain.
Not only was my house disgusting but I got sick almost the moment I walked in the door. True story. Then I got trapped in my bathroom for hours because the door knob had corroded from the inside out due to all the moisture. Black Mold November.
Our Black November Offer
I brought up the idea of running a “Noviembre Negro” promotion with Andres, my genius partner and woodworking extraordinaire. We were talking in the first level of our house and my daughter, who was eavesdropping from up in her room shouted down “sopa negra!” My family loves some black bean soup.
It helps that my sopa negra recipe is the absolute best, if I do say so myself. As silly as it sounds I would totally offer my recipe for CFCR blog readers…
Is that something you would like? Let me know in the comments and I will make it happen.
Anyway, back to business:
If Your November Is Getting A Little Negro
If the rains have been hard on your home, if you have wood that is looking a bit off, stains have mysteriously appeared on your ceiling or walls, you might have black mold. It could be time for some home repairs.

There is a million ways water can damage your home and just as many reasons to deal with it promptly, but the biggest ones are health and safety. There are obvious concerns, such as rotten flooring or ceilings that could collapse, but there are invisible concerns as well.
Mold can make you and your family sick. You don’t have to take my word for it. There are entire websites dedicated to surviving mold exposure. If you find yourself getting sick every November in Costa Rica the black mold hiding under your bathroom tile or inside a wall could be the culprit.
